The first CHIIKAWA feature film, Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island, has surged to the top of Japan’s 2026 box office, surpassing the latest Detective Conan installment and setting a new benchmark for the year.

Now in its seventh weekend (45 days after its July 24 release), the film reclaimed the No. 1 spot with 928,000 admissions and ¥1.415 billion in weekend gross. Distributor Toho launched the fourth wave of admission bonuses on September 5—random “charm mini figures” of Shimajiro, Siren, Hitoha, and Futaba—sparking repeat viewings and sustaining momentum.

As of early September, cumulative admissions have reached 9.6 million, with total box office exceeding ¥13.89 billion (roughly HK$700 million). That figure edges past Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway (¥13.7 billion) and matches or slightly exceeds the ¥13.89 billion record set by Jujutsu Kaisen 0, placing CHIIKAWA as the biggest film in Japan so far in 2026.

Toho expressed surprise at the film’s endurance, noting it continues to set new milestones, with more surprises teased during the ongoing run as IP popularity remains high. CHIIKAWA’s popularity has also been strong in Hong Kong, where its cute characters have driven a phenomenon spanning merchandise to the big screen—reflecting shifting tastes in Japan’s animation market.
