In Japan—long regarded as a “camera kingdom”—Chinese imaging brand Insta360 is seeing surging demand. On the opening day of its new flagship store in Asakusa, Tokyo, consumers queued for hours to grab the latest models, while the Luna Ultra and X6 quickly climbed to the top of sales charts on Yodobashi and Rakuten. Online, the white version of the new launch sold out within five minutes, marking one of the standout consumer-electronics export success stories in recent years.
According to IDC, Insta360 held a 71% value share of the global 360-degree (panoramic) camera market in Q1 2026. By contrast, GoPro—once the dominant player in action cameras—has seen its performance weaken markedly. GoPro’s official results show Q2 2026 revenue fell 31% year-over-year to about $105 million, with a GAAP net loss of $51 million as hardware shipments and core action-camera sales contracted sharply, intensifying overall operating pressure.

Industry analysts say Insta360’s breakthrough stems from its “shoot first, frame later” 360-degree approach combined with advanced AI imaging algorithms. Features such as invisible selfie-stick removal and AI auto-tracking better match the content-creation workflows of travel vloggers and outdoor enthusiasts. The company’s lineup spans both 360 cameras and standard action cameras, with tightly integrated hardware and editing software that lowers the barrier to post-production. On distribution, Insta360 now covers around 1,500 offline retail stores in Japan while pushing online and offline channels in tandem, enabling rapid penetration of the local market.

GoPro, meanwhile, has long relied on a single-lens action-camera form factor, with a slower pace of product innovation and more limited use-case scenarios. In recent years, subscription services have helped cushion revenue, but they have not been large enough to offset the ongoing shrinkage in hardware sales. As short-form video creation explodes, demand for flexible angles and easy AI-powered editing has grown—areas where Insta360’s 360-plus-AI solution fits the trend, steadily eroding GoPro’s traditional share and reshaping the global action-camera competitive landscape.
