Meta has announced that its AI assistant, Meta AI, is now officially available in Hong Kong. Local users can access the service immediately via a dedicated Meta AI app and the meta.ai website, with integration planned across Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp in the coming weeks.
A key highlight of the launch is robust Cantonese support, tuned to Hong Kong’s cultural context and everyday language. Meta says the model can understand local culture, language, and context, delivering more conversational, “grounded” responses rather than formal written Chinese or English-only outputs.
While many AI tools offer multiple languages, they have often struggled with Cantonese slang and Hong Kong-specific life scenarios. Meta AI has been adjusted to match local usage habits, so users can communicate directly in Cantonese for everyday queries, lifestyle suggestions, and content creation.
As AI competition intensifies, major tech firms are actively courting the Hong Kong market. By making Cantonese localisation a selling point, Meta aims to narrow the gap with local users and turn AI from a generic tool into a closer-to-home assistant. Industry analysts note that once AI truly understands local language and culture, its application scenarios will expand significantly.
