Scenes from the science-fiction film Back to the Future may soon become reality. Elon Musk has unveiled Tesla’s new Roadster, a two-seat all-electric supercar that incorporates aerospace technology from SpaceX rockets, creating a vehicle designed to push beyond the physical limits of conventional cars.

The car features clean lines and a space-inspired aesthetic, with concealed headlights, a full-width rear light bar, gold-tinted glass reminiscent of a space helmet and titanium trim. Inside, multi-mode fans and a ground-sealing system generate powerful downforce, allowing the car to grip the road even when stationary. At the launch event, Tesla also demonstrated the Roadster driving straight up a C-shaped ramp.

The standout feature is its 10 cold-gas thrusters. The system uses electric actuators to rapidly fine-tune thrust and stabilise the car’s posture, enabling it to perform a standing backflip and leap over several vehicles. Acceleration is equally remarkable, with a 0–60mph time of just 0.81 seconds. The body makes extensive use of lightweight, high-strength materials such as magnesium, titanium and carbon fibre, while manual controls and fixed seats deliver exceptionally fast dynamic responses.

Musk said the Roadster is expected to enter mass production in 2028, with three versions available. The base model comes with active aerodynamics and a ground-adhesion system, making it suitable for both tracks and ordinary roads. It is available for pre-order on Tesla’s Hong Kong website with a US$39,000 deposit.

The Thrust upgrade package adds cold-gas thrusters at the rear. The top-spec Rocket version features thrusters surrounding the entire vehicle, capable of rotating in multiple directions to achieve true flight. However, this version is invitation-only, unavailable to the general public and prohibited from driving on public roads.
