Cross-border travel between Hong Kong and Shenzhen is set for an upgrade, with the new Huanggang Port due to open soon. Registration is now available for its new “cooperative inspection, single clearance” system. By integrating the inspection procedures of both sides, the arrangement allows travellers to complete both sets of immigration formalities with a single document check, significantly reducing border-crossing times.
From October 6, eligible Hong Kong residents can register to use the new port’s self-service clearance channels. Those aged 14 or above can also activate facial recognition clearance, allowing them to cross the border without repeatedly presenting their documents.
The new port is equipped with more than 100 self-service channels across its arrival, departure and vehicle inspection areas. The Immigration Department expects overall clearance times to fall substantially once the facility begins operating, helping ease peak-hour congestion at the existing port and improve clearance efficiency.
Hong Kong residents aged seven or above who hold a Hong Kong permanent identity card and a valid Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents, commonly known as a Home Return Permit, and have already activated access to the mainland’s automated clearance channels are eligible to register. Registration can be completed through the “Hong Kong e-Channel” app, service points at the port or self-service kiosks. Travellers can also register and complete immigration checks during their first crossing, offering a simple and flexible process.
The authorities said parents or guardians must register on behalf of minors. Online registration requires identity verification through “iAM Smart” to ensure border-crossing security. The Immigration Department also reminded residents that, even after registering for self-service clearance, they must still carry valid travel documents when crossing the border in case of spot checks.
For vehicles, the new port will feature one-stop joint clearance lanes, allowing checks by both sides to be completed in a single stop. Customs authorities are fine-tuning equipment operations and working with Shenzhen to establish comprehensive contingency arrangements to keep vehicle clearance stable and smooth.
Historical border-crossing data show that Huanggang and Lok Ma Chau handle substantial daily vehicle traffic. The authorities expect the new port to accommodate a steady volume of cross-border vehicles. Its new clearance system is intended to improve the efficiency of passenger and freight movements and further strengthen connectivity between Hong Kong and Shenzhen.
