Rolex is celebrating the 100th anniversary of its groundbreaking Oyster — the brand’s first waterproof wristwatch. Symbolising the brand’s enduring spirit of innovation that has accompanied humanity’s greatest achievements, the Oyster represents Rolex’s pioneering vision of precision timepieces that are impervious to water and dust, as envisioned by founder Hans Wilsdorf.
To mark this historic milestone, Rolex is presenting the “Oyster Story” exhibition, paying tribute to the origins and legacy of the Oyster while showcasing its evolution. The exhibition will run from 10 to 28 June 2026 at the West Bund Dome Art Center in Shanghai.
Through rare collectible pieces, historical and contemporary watches, inspiring stories of notable wearers, and immersive installations, the exhibition traces the development of the Oyster and reveals how it has redefined the future of watchmaking.

Highlights of the Exhibition
A selection of iconic Rolex timepieces will be on display, chronicling the brand’s journey alongside explorers and pioneers across the deepest oceans, highest peaks, and even outer space. On the second floor, a dedicated area features portraits of 100 remarkable individuals who have worn Rolex watches, alongside rare historical and modern timepieces, including private treasures loaned by collectors.
At the heart of the exhibition is an immersive optical atomic clock experience, highlighting Rolex’s “Superlative Chronometer” certification standards. A screening room and reading lounge further enrich the visit, offering videos and publications that explore Rolex’s world across watchmaking, sports, arts, and environmental conservation.

The Enduring Oyster Philosophy
Hans Wilsdorf firmly believed in proving quality through real-world testing. He insisted that true excellence could only be validated under the harshest conditions of endurance, precision, and time.
This philosophy lies at the core of the “Oyster Story” exhibition and continues to define Rolex’s commitment to excellence. The brand’s relentless pursuit of perfection, courage in facing challenges, and drive to push beyond limits are embodied not only in its watches but also in the world of sports, where elite athletes carry forward this spirit generation after generation.

The same values guide Rolex’s partnerships with leading cultural institutions and renowned artists, as well as its support for explorers, scientists, and conservationists who venture into the unknown and protect our natural world. Together, these extraordinary individuals uphold the Oyster spirit and continue to create new chapters of achievement.
