US President Donald Trump has signed a new executive order directing federal executive agencies, where legally permitted, to replace the term “artificial intelligence (AI)” with “Super Intelligence (SI)” in non-statutory official materials. The change applies to external government communications, public statements, government websites, research reports and policy documents.
The executive order states that the actual capabilities of today’s related technologies have already gone far beyond the limits envisioned when the term “artificial intelligence” was first coined. These emerging technologies are continuously expanding the boundaries of human creativity and creating new applications across fields including scientific research and healthcare. The administration believes that the new term, “Super Intelligence”, more accurately reflects the technology’s current capabilities and future growth potential.
The renaming will not apply retrospectively. Regulations, presidential directives, contracts, grant records and archived documents that have already taken effect will retain their existing wording and will not need to be amended.
Trump had previously voiced his views on the term “artificial intelligence”, saying that “AI” creates a false impression. He later stated at the United Nations General Assembly that US government public documents would adopt “Super Intelligence (SI)” as the standard term going forward.
